Title of Dissertation/Thesis:FIR pulse based UWB Transmitter
Abstract:
Impulse-radio (IR) carrier-free ultra wideband (UWB) is a promising wireless radio technology, which adopts extremely short pulse trains to transmit data. Due to its ultra wide band in the frequency range of 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz, it can potentially support several Gbps throughput for wireless video and multimedia streaming. Hence, this dissertation will focus on the research of the RF transmitter topology for the IR-UWB SoC and the detailed circuit design for the critical blocks in the transmitter. According to the shape of FCC mask regulated to limit the power spectral density (PSD) of the radiated signals, systematic analysis for how to choose the number of FIR pulse stages as the optimized realization is presented in this dissertation. Then, with certain pulse repeating frequency (PRF), we accordingly propose the design methodology to derive the optimized pulse width and amplitude to comply with and fully utilize the limited room under the FCC PSD mask. Meanwhile, using direct high frequency to generate FIR pulse would cost too much power. So we propose a low power topology by using injecting-lock technology to realize high performance multiphase clock signal. A wide band frequency synthesizer (FS) is used as the injection signal for injection lock oscillator (ILO). Both simulation and test results demonstrate that injection-locking technology achieves a good trade off between low power and high performance clock signal. According to the analysis result of optimized pulse, we propose current share architechture to realize the pulse generator (PG). Then, we use Bias-T architechture and offchip balun to test the final output pulse. At last, we achieve the 7.5GHz bandwith FIR pulse based UWB transmitter. The architecture proposed in this dissertation is taped out by IBM90nm process. The chip integrated frequency synthesizer, injection-lock multiphase oscillator, FIR pulse generator, SPI interface, PRBS generator and so on.
