Title of Dissertation/Thesis:Research and Design of Digital Audio/Video Multiplexing and Demultiplexing Systems

Abstract:
With the development of electronics technology, the broadcasting industry has been witnessing a transfer from analog equipments to digital equipments. As a result, digital audio/video interconnect technology is becoming increasingly important. This paper presents the design of audio multiplexing and demultiplexing systems, and then discusses some issues of FIR filter design, which is a key module in sample rate converters. In digital broadcasting systems, the most widely utilized standards are ITU-R BT.656 video standard and AES/EBU audio standard. In TV broadcast studios, audio signals and video signals may experience different delay time due to the separated routing and processing systems. To solve this problem, SMPTE brought forward the ANSI/SMPTE 272M standard, which provides a scheme to embed digital audio data into digital video data. To achieve the goal of multiplexing audio data into digital video signal, we can use GS9023B manufactured by GENNUM. However, the chip can process only 48kHz and 20bit/24bit audio signal. For the purpose of gaining more flexibility and lower cost in digital processing systems, audio multiplexing and demultiplexing systems implemented on Lattice LFXP6C FPGA is designed in this paper. Simulation and test results show that the circuit can perform the function as expected. On the other hand, due to historical reasons, multiple sampling rates coexist in the current audio processing systems. This paper discusses the theory and implementation of sample rate converters, and then presents some issues in FIR filter design, which act as a key module of sample rate converters.
