Title of Dissertation/Thesis:Key Technology for Accelerating Navigation Radar Processing on a Heterogeneous CPU/GPU Platform
Abstract:
Navigation radar is an important detection equipment for ships. With radar’s help, a ship can detect obstacles or other vessels in a timely fashion so as to avoid collisions, especially in foggy or rainy or snowy. The development of computer and VLSI technology makes it possible to use a general purpose computer as the radar signal processing back-end. Such solutions have the advantage of small form factor, ease of maintenance, and better cost efficiency. In this paper, we implemented a signal processing back-end used for a shipborne navigation radar on a heterogeneous computing platform. First, the functional requirements for navigation radars are analyzed. On such basis, a software architecture for radar signal processing is proposed. The details are covered by this thesis. Next the thesis elaborates GPU-friendly algorithms for our radar signal processing system. Finally, a real-time signal processing and targets displaying system based on the GPU was implemented in CUDA. Our software radar outperforms its CPU equivalent by a factor of over 10. The results shows that GPU based software radars have strong potential in future applications.
