摘要/Abstract:

This paper introduces an innovative design which implements an area and power efficient near-lossless image compressor in an application specified integrated circuit (ASIC) for power-constrained image sensor nodes in medical field such as the wireless endoscope capsule. The compressor is composed of a JPEG-LS encoder with a novel hardware-oriented image filter which improves the average compression by 17.3%. Architecture design techniques such as parallel pipelines and in-stage resource sharing are extremely employed to save the die area. In addition, low power design techniques such as hierarchy memory access, clock gating and voltage scaling are used to reduce power consumption. When implemented in 0.18um 1P6M CMOS technology, the compressor occupies a die area of 0.85mm2. The implemented JPEG-LS encoder costs the lowest gate counts and memory requirement in the reported literature. For VGA images at 15 frames per second, the real-time compression can be achieved at 20MHz clock frequency with power dissipation of 800uW at 1.1V supply voltage.
