Abstract:The simultaneous acquisition of multiple vital signs from the human body, such as ECG, EEG, EMG, pulse oximetry and temperature, will be a key differentiating feature for next generation wireless body area network (WBAN) systems. Energy-efficient designs have been previously demonstrated that optimize an individual wireless sensor node for low power operation. However, the necessary scheme for synchronizing multiple nodes operating coherently with an off-body central base station has been largely overlooked. Besides this, traditional wearable wireless sensors require a battery that further increases each sensor node’s size, weight and cost. We demonstrate experimentally, a batteryless, multi-node WBAN system that features: (1) wireless energy harvesting using power broadcast from a base station such as a smart phone; (2) duty-cycling and TDMA synchronization of multiple nodes by employing injection-locked wireless clock distribution.

Biography:Dr. Lingli Xia received the B.S. degree in electronics science and technology in 2005 from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China and the Ph.D. Degree in microelectronics and solid state electronics in 2010 from Fudan University, Shanghai, China.
