A new method is proposed in this paper to analyze the relationship between the resolution of the first stage and capacitor matching requirements in the pipelined Analog-to-digital converters (ADC). The capacitor mismatch, which is the main source of errors in the first stage of the high precision pipelined ADC, is discussed so that overall Differential nonlinearity (DNL) and Iintegral nonlinearity (INL) can be obtained. These expressions of the DNL and INL show that, when the resolution of the first stage is increased by m-bit (assume m is an integer), matching requirements can be approximately relaxed in a ratio of 2^-m and 2^-m/2 for a certain DNL and INL, respectively. This result is verified by the Monte Carlo simulation.
